The puncher's glove, still handmade in Mexico
Cleto Reyes has been making gloves in Mexico City since 1945 and the design has barely moved since. Real leather, a water-repellent lining, and noticeably less foam across the knuckle than anything else on our wall. That thin knuckle is the whole design — more of the punch arrives, which is why these are the gloves you keep seeing in professional fights.
It is also the honest warning. A Reyes glove looks after your hand, but it puts less between your knuckle and your partner's head than a 16oz Thai glove does, so treat it as a bag, pad and competition glove first. Plenty of gyms have a padding rule for sparring — check yours before you spend this much.
And it is a lot: these are the most expensive gloves in the shop. They are made by hand, which Reyes will tell you themselves means slight colour variation from pair to pair. Broken in, they close around your fist in a way nothing else here does.

Sizing & fit notes
- The hand compartment is narrow — a 16oz Reyes feels smaller inside than a 16oz Thai glove. Try them on over the wraps you actually train in.
- The lace-up cuff runs a long way up the forearm. That is the wrist support people buy them for, and it is a nuisance if you train alone.
- Real leather, so give them a few weeks. They break in around your fist rather than going soft.
