Boxing & Muay Thai gloves
Glove ounces measure padding, not hand size. Pick the weight by what you're hitting first, then check it against your bodyweight.
| Bodyweight | Bag & pads | Sparring |
|---|---|---|
| Under 120 lbs | 10–12 oz | 14 oz |
| 120–150 lbs | 12–14 oz | 14–16 oz |
| 150–180 lbs | 14–16 oz | 16 oz |
| 180–210 lbs | 16 oz | 16–18 oz |
| Over 210 lbs | 16 oz | 18 oz |
- Buying one pair only? Buy 16 oz. It covers bag work and sparring; a 12 oz glove covers only bag work.
- Most gyms enforce a 16 oz minimum for sparring regardless of bodyweight — check yours before ordering.
- Always try gloves on over the hand wraps you actually train in.
Shin guards
Thai brands size shin guards against height and weight rather than shoe size — height sets the shin length, weight sets the calf circumference.
| Size | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| S | 5'0" – 5'5" | Up to 130 lbs |
| M | 5'5" – 5'9" | 130 – 165 lbs |
| L | 5'9" – 6'1" | 165 – 200 lbs |
| XL | 6'1" and up | 200 lbs + |
- Between sizes? Size up if you're long-limbed, down if you're stocky. Shin coverage beats a snug calf.
- The top edge should sit just below the kneecap, and the instep piece should cover the top of the foot.
- Leather guards take two to four weeks to break in and fit better afterwards.
Muay Thai shorts
Thai-made shorts are sized for the Thai domestic market. Order one size up from your US size — this is the single most common sizing mistake.
| US size | Waist | Thai size |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 26–28" | S |
| S | 28–30" | M |
| M | 30–32" | L |
| L | 32–34" | XL |
| XL | 34–36" | XXL |
| XXL | 36–40" | 3XL / 4XL |
- Brands manufactured for the western market generally size normally — check the label origin.
- Not sure? Measure a pair that fits laid flat across the waistband and double it.
- Leg flare matters more than length for kicking clearance.
Sparring headgear
Measure your head circumference with a tape just above the ears and eyebrows. Head shape varies more than circumference, so try it on where you can.
| Size | Head circumference |
|---|---|
| S | 20" – 21.5" (51–55 cm) |
| M | 21.5" – 22.5" (55–57 cm) |
| L | 22.5" – 23.5" (57–60 cm) |
| XL | 23.5" + (60 cm +) |
- The front edge should sit just above the eyebrows and the ear holes should line up.
- Nod and shake your head hard — correctly fitted headgear moves as one piece with your skull.
- Nothing should touch your eyes when you look to the side.
Hand wraps
Wrap length is about hand size, not bodyweight. Too long and you finish with a bunched wad at the wrist.
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| 120 in / 3 m | Kids and smaller hands |
| 180 in / 4.5 m | Standard adult — the default |
| 210 in / 5.4 m | Large hands, or if you like heavy knuckle coverage |
- Semi-elastic ("Mexican style") wraps conform better; cotton wraps hold exactly the tension you set.
- Buy two pairs so one can dry — they need washing after every session.
- A correct wrap feels slightly loose with an open hand and snug when you make a fist.
Kids gear
Kids sizing runs on age as a starting point and bodyweight as the check. When they're between sizes, size to the weight, not the birthday.
| Age | Gloves | Wraps |
|---|---|---|
| 4–7 | 4–6 oz | 120 in |
| 8–11 | 6–8 oz | 120 in |
| 12–14 | 8–10 oz | 120–180 in |
| 15+ | Adult sizing | 180 in |
- Don't size up to "grow into" — a loose glove lets the hand slide and puts the wrist at risk.
- Kids' shin guards follow the same height/weight logic as adults, at the small end of the chart.
- Bring them in. Ten minutes at the counter beats two rounds of shipping.
